It's POTTY time!

So the beast of the potty chair has been released from the back of the closet where I had it hidden. My mother (because she swears to God that I was potty trained at ONE) gave Little Man a potty chair for Christmas last year. I threw it in the closet thinking I wouldn't have to look at the thing for a long time. Well, it's been a year. Daycare has been introducing him to the little itty bitty toilets they have, and he has actually used them a few times. When he stayed at my mother's house that night she told me he asked to use the toilet. So the potty chair has been assembled, and wouldn't you know the thing plays music when he finishes his business. I had him sit in it with his clothes on after I put it together and told him it's for pee-pee and ka-ka. He got it. He didn't use it, but he would bring Daddy into the bathroom to show him where I parked the chair and say "Pee-pee." I will report the first time he successfully uses it.
What I'm looking for from you guys is...how did you know your kid(s) was ready to use the potty? Was it easy? Advice? Funny stories?
I actually already have a funny story, where it kinda showed me he might be ready...
The other night I was sitting in the bathroom while he was taking his bath and he stood up. I reached out for him , because I'm a paranoid asshole and I don't want him just standing in the tub when there are bubbles or soap in it. He looked at me and smiled. And then he peed right over the side of the tub. Onto my floor. Now, I'm used to him peeing on my bathroom floor when I take his diaper off right before I put him in the tub, it's almost expected now, but that shit was FUNNY. No pee-pee in the tub, right?
So share, I'm all for input.

*please bear with me, I lost all my sidebar links when I decided to stupidly change my template. I wanted a change, and now I have to do each and every link all over...or better yet, if you don't see yours on the side yet, leave me a comment with your URL and help me out a little. Searching for you guys isn't as easy as I thought it would be...

Well...come Dec. 5th when I take Girlie Girlie to the doctors for her 18th check-up I do plan on asking when the appropriate time to begin trying will be. I know Little Man we tried between 18 months and 2 years and he wasn't at all ready. Had no desire for it at all. But when he turned 2 1/2 he suddenly said "I don't want this diaper anymore" and there was no looking back from there.

Right now Girlie Girlie will grab herself and say pee pee (back or front) after she's down her business. So I am assuming she's got a little understanding of it but not the ability to control it just yet. I'll let you know what my doctor says.

omg, you do NOT want to know about potty-training here. I don't want to scare you, but let's just say that boys can be VERY lazy. Hopefully you'll have a better time. I gotta say, potty-training is my one and only true hell. Can't wait for all 3 to be rid of those darn diapers/pull-ups/scrapes in the undies/peeing on the floor just because, etc. etc. FOREVER!

Hey! All our lives we men have to put up with stories about how grossed out women is that they knew a 'knuckle-dragger' that pees in the tub.

I mean just because it is a time saver--and we can--doesn't make it wrong does it??

LOL

Seriously, training 'em early not to use the giant porcelin 'god' as a toilet is a good first step

Leah actually just peed in hers for the first (and so far only) time a few days ago. Hers plays music too! is it the throne?! Tim still has to put batteries in ours. Geez. It's been forever.

What we did was just put it in the batrhoom a while ago because she asked me a few times to go on the potty but didn't do anything. She just wanted to be like me, so I let her "pretend." But anyway, they say when they get bothered in a dirty diaper, can acknowledge and tell you when they are peeing/pooping in their diaper, and show an interest. There are other signs- you can check out the american baby or parents sites for tips and signs I'm sure.

Good luck with the potty training. I wish I could give you some tips to help but I got lucky with my daughter. She pretty much trained herself. She just decided one day that she was ready and has used the potty since then. I hope I get that lucky the with my little boy.

Good luck, I have no tips because we are so not there yet. Unless I smell something or get suspicious, I wouldn't know if The Kid went or not. I think he likes the warm squishy feeling he gests. You know, its the same thing with Dominican people. It seems that as soon as the child can sit up, they're wanting to potty train them. It's not unusual to hear them say that they potty trained their kids at one either. Odd, isn't it?

Diana, I had my daughter wait for my son because he wasn't really ready until after 3yo. the worst thing you can do is force it before they are ready though, it usually send them sliding backwards.

I wrote about some tips and tricks here, http://www.parentingourchildren.com/9/
if you are interested!

I'd like to know where I can get a musical toilet that plays a tune when business is finished.

My eight-year-old has taken to using the bathroom as her own private place where she can read and play Gameboy undisturbed. I'd like some sort of sign that it's okay to start banging on the door, telling her to get out.

Hmmm, don't really know yet. I have a girl who's 16 months.

Pretty funny about the peeing outside the tub. He's very clean and doesn't want to taint the tub water.
